At the start of 2023 I left my job to pursue a startup with some extremely talented business partners. That startup was called Whala, otherwise known as "The app of all trades". Whala is a mobile application where users can book any tradesperson to complete any task, on-demand similar to booking an Uber. In using this model, customers enjoy many benefits including:
Instant access to tradespeople who could otherwise be booked-out
Fixed hourly rates (no more over-quoting)
Track your tradie en-route to your house, just like Uber
Pay for materials at cost price (no markup added)
We also built a second app called Whala Pro. This is where the tradies could sign in, receive and accept jobs, manage their calendar and more. Whala Pro's enjoy many benefits of this lifestyle-oriented work model, including:
Tradies work set their calendar to work around their life, and take time off whenever they please
Tradies earn between $52p/h (unqualified trades like furniture-assembly) and $72p/h (qualified trades like plumbing & electrical).
Whala Pro's run their own business without having to worry about the expense of attracting customers, the time involved in running admin, or the difficulties with quoting. They just turn on the app, receive jobs, and get paid. Whala!
For this business, I worked intensively alongside my business partners to create a beautiful brand, build a strong website that ranks well in search results, develop two mobile applications, design loads of collateral, build out multiple onboarding flows and automations, run advertising campaigns to attract customers, and heaps more.
